The Devonshire Library

The Buxton campus has its very own library – The Devonshire Library. Situated just off the dome, this space is easily accessible to students. With its tall ceilings and stained glass windows, it’s a lovely setting to study in. In the first few weeks of university, new students will be provided with an information session to familiarise themselves with the Library’s services, and there are also drop-in workshops held throughout the year, but lets talk you through some of its best features…

  • During term time, the library is open 7 days a week, and during deadline season, the opening hours are increased.

  • There is a team of really friendly and knowledgeable staff, including Subject Librarians, who love to help. Trust me, these guys know their stuff!

  • The library is home to thousands of books, however students can borrow any book from any of the university libraries. If a certain book is on a different campus, you can request that it is delivered to Buxton.

  • New books are always being introduced to the library, and if a particular book has 5 or more reservations, the library will order MORE copies!

  • You can search for any book in the library using the online catalogue which can be accessed on a computer or through a machine situated in the library.

  • As well as books, the library also houses academic journals, up to date industry magazines and previous students’ dissertations to read.

  • The library offers an online service with access to thousands of e-books and journals.

  • There are loads of computers in the library, as well as laptops that can be borrowed. There is also seating with plug sockets if you’d prefer to bring in your own laptop.

  • The library has 2 colour printers and scanners as well as binding and laminating equipment.

  • The library is shared with the FE students, however there is a designated HE students room which is exclusive to university students.

  • There is a group study room equipped with computers and a large screen – perfect for practising presentations.

  • There is also a silent room that allows you to work in peace should you wish. Can’t stand the sound of talking whilst you’re trying to concentrate? No problem – this room is a chat free zone!

  • The library has recently introduced 4 study pods – small partially enclosed spaces with a desk, chair and plug sockets where students can cocoon themselves in.

  • Equipment such as video cameras and dictaphones can also be borrowed.

  • And the best thing? You are allowed to take coffee into the library with you!!

The Devonshire Library is an invaluable resource for students to use, I hope you’ll enjoy making the most of it as much as I have throughout my studies!
